A tribute to the Atomic Era
This is SKALA Model’s tribute to the roadside motor hotels that dominated America’s highways during the 50s and 60s. An upshot of extensive highway system developments, these buildings often only single or double storey, would be situated on inexpensive land at the edge of towns, away from the dominion of the high rise hotels. At the entrances to these motels, brightly lit neon signs adorned with Western or Atomic era imagery, would invite road weary guests.
Sadly with freeways bypassing existing highways these independent motels were forced to succumb to holiday inn type chains and by the 1980’s were all but gone or in disrepair. Nowadays, as lamented by so many Hollywood films, these buildings invoke a sense of adventure, almost as if they are stopovers reserved only for fugitives. This 1.100 model was fabricated from boxboard and clear acrylic, clad in various timber veneers - a custom made clear acrylic display case protects it.
